Elite Runner – Joan Benoit Samuelson

Our interview with Elite runner, Joan Benoit Samuelson before the 2020 virtual Bellin Run.
GBP: Joan, do you know how many miles have you run in your lifetime?

Joan: I have run approximately 150,000 miles during my career which has spanned from high school until now. I entered high school in 1971.

GBP: How many marathons have you run?

Joan: I have no idea, but I would say between 70-75. Ordinarily, I run two marathons a year and my first marathon was in Boston in 1979. My most recent marathon was in Berlin on September 29, 2019

GBP: Can you tell us what drives your winning spirit?

Joan: Determination, passion, and the willingness to work hard for what I have wanted to achieve. Often, I talk about the 4 P’s that have been my guiding principles throughout my life and career: Passion, Patience, Perseverance, and Purpose.

GBP: Will you approach this race differently with the social distancing? Do you think Covid-19 will affect the race and if so, how?

Joan: This year’s Bellin 10K will be my first virtual race. However, full disclosure, I have been dealing with an injured knee so I am not certain that I will be able to run on Saturday. I have been keeping fit in recent weeks by bicycling.

GBP: What is your favorite type of packaging? (you know there is only one correct answer)

Joan: Boxes from Green Bay Packaging, especially when it is packaging Wisconsin cheese 🙂
