Jeff Bollier, a journalist at the Green Bay Press-Gazette, recently highlighted the net-zero water validation from UL achieved by the Green Bay Mill division of Green Bay Packaging. Since the new mill began construction in 2018, Green Bay Packaging has been focused on establishing the new standard in water use for the packaging industry.
The mill accomplished this goal by partnering with NEW Water, Green Bay’s area wastewater utilities, and support from the city and county. Before paper mills were some of the heaviest users of energy, wood, and water, but sustainability efforts such as this one have shown a shift in the industry. Green Bay Packaging was one of the first pioneers of this shift when in the early 1990s the Green Bay Mill implemented it’s closed-loop water system.
Matthew Szymanski, Vice President of Mill Operations said “Environmental stewardship has always been in Green Bay Packaging’s DNA. Every generation, we continue to add into our recipe of environmental stewardship”.
In his article, Bollier goes on to explain how the mill takes a slurry that’s 99% water and 1% fiber and turns it into container board. This container board is the product that gets used in point of purchase displays, folding cartons, and all the products that Green Bay Packaging develops at it’s 35+ locations.
