Green Bay Mill is Setting A New Standard for Net Zero Water Use

Jeff Bollier, a journalist at the Green Bay Press-Gazette, recently highlighted the net-zero water validation from UL achieved by the Green Bay Mill division of Green Bay Packaging. Since the new mill began construction in 2018, Green Bay Packaging has been focused on establishing the new standard in water use for the packaging industry.

The mill accomplished this goal by partnering with NEW Water, Green Bay’s area wastewater utilities, and support from the city and county. Before paper mills were some of the heaviest users of energy, wood, and water, but sustainability efforts such as this one have shown a shift in the industry. Green Bay Packaging was one of the first pioneers of this shift when in the early 1990s the Green Bay Mill implemented it’s closed-loop water system.

GREEN BAY, WI, February 22, 2022 – Green Bay Packaging announced today that the Green Bay mill achieved Net-Zero Water in its production of 100% recycled containerboard paper, the first-ever UL with validation of this environmental claim. “Environmental sustainability has always been at the core of Green Bay Packaging’s values. Our goal is to operate the most environmentally friendly mill system in the United States, with water quality in our communities a primary focus,” says Green Bay Packaging President and CEO, William Kress.

The Net-Zero Water system at the Green Bay mill reduces water demand through use of reclaimed water and alternative water sources, offsetting the need for freshwater consumption. The goal in achieving “net-zero water” is to transform a water-intense process into a more efficient process, returning more water to the water source than has been removed.
