Green Bay Packaging’s 90-Year History of Innovation in the Corrugated Industry

For 90 years, Green Bay Packaging has been a leading innovator within the packaging industry. Our mission is simple: offer quality and environmentally friendly products that are cost-effective for our customers.  We have achieved this goal through safe manufacturing processes and an employee-first mindset. With longevity in mind, Green Bay Packaging has continued to grow with new operations across the US. Beginning as a box company in 1933, we grew within the Green Bay area with the Folding Carton Division and Green Bay Mill Division before expanding to over 35 locations in 16 states. Combined with innovative designs, the adoption of cutting-edge technology, and sustainability initiatives, we've earned ourselves an outstanding reputation as one of the most trustworthy packaging businesses in the US.  A key driver of our continued growth has been our exceptional team. As a family-owned business, we are fortunate to have had a legacy of 3 generations of excellent leadership. At our core, Green Bay Packaging has remained dedicated to the betterment of our people and processes. With over 4,500 employees, we strive to operate in a safe work environment. We truly value our management team and driven employees, and it shows with employee longevity averaging over 10 years.  A Commitment to Sustainability  Our commitment to sustainability is a core value that Green Bay Packaging stands on. As far back as 1957, we began collecting old corrugated containers (OCC) to produce corrugated medium in the Green Bay paper mill; this occurred 20 years before the concept of "recycling" was recognized. We strive to manufacture the most sustainable products with a focus on reducing waste and using renewable resources through initiatives like recycling water from our manufacturing plants.  This has enabled us to have one of the lowest carbon footprints compared to other packaging companies. Our sustainability goals include: Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 20% per ton of paper production. Continuing to monitor and reduce our watershed impacts. Achieving a 90% landfill diversion by 2030.  By creating actionable goals, Green Bay Packaging has accomplished sustainable measures in energy, water management, waste diversion, and forestry. We design packaging for the environment, sourcing fibers from certified forests and optimizing our resources to produce green products that are 100% recyclable. From start to finish, our business practices have been developed with sustainability in mind to provide high-quality paper products. This has resulted in:  23,800,000 trees less harvested  5,600,000 gallons of water not consumed   6,230,000 greenhouse gas tons not generated   47% renewable energy company-wide  With our first in-the-world net-zero circular reclaimed water system at the Green Bay Mill, we have achieved the most environmentally friendly recycled mill in North America. Green Bay Packaging continues to employ sustainable practices to reduce environmental impacts during the paper production process.  Investing in Technology Over the years, we have invested heavily in cutting-edge technology to ensure that our products meet the highest standards of quality and safety while at the same time placing a great deal of focus on sustainability. Green Bay Packaging is investing back into the business to provide forward-thinking jobs to our employees. Before we began the construction of our state-of-the-art Green Bay Mill, we set out to design a facility with the future in mind. Our plan included a complete degree of automation for safety, environmental control, sustainability, and process quality. In 2021, we saw this plan come to life with the successful start-up of our new mill.  In the Green Bay recycle paper mill, we utilize Industry 4.0 manufacturing technology for better decision-making. Industry 4.0 encapsulates the rapid change in technology within the paper industry due to advanced automation. Our efforts to remain an industry leader have led us to predictive maintenance, higher quality processes, and new levels of efficiency and responsiveness to produce the highest quality recycled sheet.  Green Bay Packaging has also designed two new corrugated box 'Super-Plants' in Tulsa, OK (opened in 2021) and Fort Worth, TX (opening in 2023), which allow us to expand our operation with the latest production equipment for full efficiency and to keep all our existing employees.  As an industry leader, we provide world-class quality while implementing industry-shaping innovations and process technology.  Investing in the Communities Where We Operate  We are dedicated to reinvesting in the communities where we operate. From providing jobs for local residents to supporting numerous charitable initiatives, Green Bay Packaging is proud to be a strong corporate citizen.  The George Kress Foundation was founded in 1953 with the mission of caring for the people in our community. With a philanthropic focus, the foundation contributes to programs serving young people, education, health, and cultural activities. We are dedicated to giving back with intentional actions that keep our communities strong, diverse, and vibrant.  Our commitment doesn't end there—we strive to create an employee-centric environment. With safety top of mind, we are dedicated to the well-being of our employees. We provide competitive benefits and professional development opportunities that help our workers grow beyond our walls.  As we mark 90 years of excellence, Green Bay Packaging takes pride in our remarkable achievements thus far and will continue creating a lasting legacy as an industry leader because of those who support us.  Our employees remain at the heart of all that we do each and every day.
